Ashina Watanabe “SEEDs - Yohkai Chaos”

Dates: Sep 20 – Oct 2, 2016 (Closed Sep 26)

12:00-19:00 (Last day open until 16:00)

Location: Gallery KINGYO

Gallery KINGYO is pleased to present “SEEDs – Yohkai Chaos,” an exhibition of works by Ashina Watanabe from September 20th to October 2nd, 2016.

Ashina Watanabe has visited and lived in a number of places, both inside and outside Japan. She had the oppotunity to research and sketch a wide variety of places, objects and people. She has focused on the invisible, formless, or indeterminate presence that exists beyond consciousness which she calls `Yohkai Chaos`. This presence can be something tangible, for example, there is a variety of unseen and unheard things surrounding us such as electricity and microscopic vibrations, radio waves, low-level radiation and so on. She tried to visualize such Yohkai Chaos in her art.

She has a traditional Japanese art educational background. Unlike traditional western art, she uses Japanese art techniques which include various flattened forms like Japanese graphic art, animation, pop culture and traditional Japanese paintings such as Hokusai paintings. Drawing minute lines using sewing yarn, what appears like compressions or overcrowded information networks can be seen in her art.

This solo exhibition “SEEDs – Yohkai Chaos,” is inspired by her 6 visits to Nepal since 2014. She has met many warm people living in the great Himalayan mountain areas, she has learned about their peaceful life and at the same time she has become increasingly aware of the problems faced in the least developed countries. Especially since 2 disastrous earthquakes hit Nepal last year, the country has been challenged with a huge reconstruction task. This made a strong impression on Ashina, as she had experienced The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 first-hand. The contrast in recovery between the two countries was striking.

Ashina was also struck by images of destruction and subsequent regeneration of PINUS CONTORTA forests following wildfires. The SEEDs of the PINUS CONTORTA tree are fire-dependent, meaning the seedpods require a higher than normal temperature to begin germination. Healthy population of the tree are dependent on wildfires.
By displaying her abstract paintings with wildflowers collected near her house in installation art, she tries to express the mystique of Nepal, destruction and regeneration images.

She has also been doing a recycling society formation art project in Nepal to reduce garbage in schools in Kathmandu.
